DHIS2 is a web-based, open source data platform used by governments, international development agencies and NGOs in more than 90 countries worldwide. It is currently recognized as the world's most widely adopted e-health information platform. The platform has become a global standard within international development and has a huge impact on the way health systems are being managed. The core DHIS2 software development is managed by the Health Information Systems Program (HISP) at the University of Oslo (UiO).
We work on projects with global reach and scale, including:
Health information management systems with more than 60 ministries of health worldwide, including South Africa, Tanzania, Ghana and Cambodia. DHIS2 is used to collect and analyze data for areas such as service utilization, family planning and immunization.
Disease surveillance and monitoring in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). DHIS2 is used to notify the right people about possible disease outbreaks so that action can be taken in time.
COVID-19 port-of-entry, case registry and contact tracing in more than 30 countries world-wide.
HIV/AIDS control in collaboration with PEPFAR, the largest initiative ever for combating a single disease. DHIS2 is used to collect data and provide analytics and insights into how funding can be spent most effectively.
Program monitoring and evaluation with NGOs such as Medecins Sans Frontieres, Save the Children, and PSI. DHIS2 is used to analyse the impact of programs, improve planning and guide resource utilization.
About this role
In order to support this wide variety of projects at scale, significant time is put into managing, testing and sharing features in a wide range of configurations for a number of stakeholders of different roles and responsibilities throughout our shared DHIS2 community. As the database analyst, it will be your primary responsibility to manage databases and supporting infrastructure across a wide array of technical support areas including:
- Training, used for our DHIS2 Academy program
- Metadata packages, used to disseminate global health standards
- Quality Assurance testing, as part of our ongoing software development roadmap
The database analyst will therefore play a key role in ensuring that the broader DHIS2 community has regular access to evaluate, review, learn and contribute to the key features that have been implemented within DHIS2 through providing and sharing demo databases at the direction of the technical areas identified above.
Core responsibilities will involve creating, executing and maintaining tools and processes for managing various training, development, testing and demo databases and their associated infrastructure. The candidate will work closely with the three technical support areas outlined above to standardize provided processes across these areas. Responsibilities are divided into the following roles:
DHIS2 infrastructure support:
- Plan upgrades of specific DHIS2 instances as directed
- Deploy and monitor DHIS2 instances on an as needed basis
- Support documentation that outlines these processes across the 3 technical support areas outlined above
DHIS2 data management:
- Co-ordinating the movement and generation of modelled metadata and data through scripts and processes outlined to execute these tasks
- Support the implementation of processes to anonymize real world data for use in training and testing
- Bonus: Develop and improve new and existing tools and processes to generate and move metadata and data
Qualifications and skills
- Fluency in English is essential; working proficiency in other languages a plus
- Previous experience working with DHIS2 databases preferred
- Degree in computer science, related field or equivalent experience
